SCHOOL OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION

The department was created in the 1994/95 academic session out of the Department of Education Technical alongside the Department of Mechanical and Electrical/Electronic Technology during the accreditation exercise by the National Commission of Technical Education (NCCE) when the Department of Education was upgraded to a School of Technical Education. In January 2004, the department was moved from Kuru Campus (near Government Science and Technical College, Bukuru) with the School of Technical Education to the Main Campus at Heipang.

The department had since its creation, two (2) options:

–        Building Technology

–        Woodwork Technology.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the department is to provide would-be technical teachers with intellectual and professional background adequate for manning public and private junior secondary schools as well as find gainful employment in the civil service, industries and be self-employed.

And to produce graduates who will be qualified to further their education to B.Ed. (Technology) level in Building and Woodwork and beyond.

Objectives

The objectives of the department are to:

  1. Meet the objectives of the National Commission of Colleges of Education (NCCE) accreditation requirements.
  2. Produce qualified and competent technical graduates in Building and Woodwork Technology programmes.
  3. Produce qualified technical teachers and practitioners of technical background capable of teaching introductory technology in the junior secondary schools and technical colleges.
  4. Prepare teachers to qualify for a two (2) year post-NCE degree programme in Technical Education either in Nigerian Universities or abroad (NCCE minimum standard).
  5. Meet the minimum requirements for registration by professional bodies such as Teachers’ Registration Council (TRC), Nigerian Association of Teachers of Technology (NATT), Nigerian Institute of Builders (NIOB), etc.
