This centre is one of the self-sustaining unit of the Polytechnic and it emerged from the Staff Development Centre after the merger with the Polytechnic in 1990. It later metamorphosed into the continuing Education Centre with two study Campuses at Lafia and Jos before the creation of Nasarawa State. It was created in order to fulfill objective number two (2) for establishing the institution which states inter-alia amongst others:

“To provide courses of in-service training to members of the public service in the State and for persons unconnected with the public service as the Governing Council deems fit”.

Aims and

Objectives of HRDC

  1. To provide avenue to candidates that are deficient in WAEC/SSCE to correct such deficiencies for possible admission into institutions of higher learning and to conduct JAMB classes.
  2. To organize and run preparatory, refresher, proficiency and such related short-term course programmes for all levels of students as a result of the growing pressure from such communities/local governments in the State.

iii.      To prepare examinations and award diplomas and other distinctions to persons who have successfully met the academic requirements prescribed by the Academic Board of Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi.

  1. To undertake community services as may be considered consistent with the aims and objectives of the Polytechnic such as provision of library services, and of recent even computer/internet services as is already being provided in some campuses to ease learning as well as promotion of knowledge. Wase/Jos Campuses were students register for JAMB, SSCE, etc on line are a clear manifestation of this.

Achievements

The Centre has:

  1. Have moved to its permanent site at Shendam and acquired 125 plots of additional land during this administration with complete development of infrastructural facilities at the Campus such as volleyball, basketball and lawn tennis courts.
  2. Fresh lands have been donated by more communities such as Mangu for the Centre and other communities in the State where these Centres are located who are showing very keen interest to develop their Centres through self help efforts.
  3. The Centre at Jos Campus has constructed three large lecture theatres with the office of the Director attached. it has improve the carrying capacity of the students in the humanities.
  4. The Centre has developed two befitting Mass Communication Studios and approval has been given by NBC Abuja for a radio station to be established in the Polytechnic to be used for practicals by the Mass Communication students.
  5. The Directorate has organized seminars with the State League of Veteran Journalists in the recent past.

It is also currently partnering with the State Local Government Service Commission to train all its workforce on contemporary local government administrative principles. Already, over 700 staff of the local government councils of all categories have benefitted from this training programme through short-term courses by the directorate.

The Centre plan to make more positive impact in these areas in the future

Prospects

    1. i) Extra-mural classes and JAMB classes at the Headquarters and its Study Centres in the State.
    2. ii) Provide more training to the staff in the public and private sectors of the State and beyond.

    iii)      Improve in service of the study centres by bringing education to the doorstep of the people in other areas such as skills acquisition programmes.

    1. iv) Introduce post graduate programmes in the humanities at the Jos Campus only.
    2. v) Introduce other diploma programmes as may be consistent with the needs of the State Public Service.
